Sabra Factory Tour, a Recipe for Hummus Deviled Eggs, and a Hummus/Dip Giveaway (Podcast #148)

I’ve always been a big fan of hummus — a dip made with cooked, mashed chickpeas, tahini (sesame seed paste), lemon juice, and lots of other yummy things. I serve it a lot with crunchy vegetables, and recently, I even got Simon (my 12-year old) to eat a bunch of baby carrots thanks to the bowl of hummus I strategically placed smack in the middle of his dinner plate. On a recent trip to Richmond, VA where I toured the Sabra company’s hummus factory and joined their panel of blogger “Tastemakers,” I discovered that using hummus as a dip is just the tip of the culinary iceberg. I share my hummus adventures on this week’s Cooking with the Moms podcast, so read on for lots of fun hummus factoids, giveaway news, recipes, and more!

Hummus replaces mayonnaise in these Hummus Deviled Eggs. This recipe got a two-thumbs up from my boys when I served it as an after-school snack.

My fellow Tastemaker Panelists and I were welcomed to the factory before donning hair nets, lab coats, hard hats, and goggles. It was not a pretty sight!

Joining me on the tour were Diane from Fit to the Finish, Renee from Cutie Booty Cakes, Kristin from Iowa Girl Eats, Chaviva from Nosh: The Gluten-Free Kosher Critic, and Linda from Short Pump Preppy.

Some cool things I learned: The factory is LEED certified … so it’s a “green” building, all the chickpeas are sourced from the United States, and the plant produces 60 tons of hummus in each eight-hour shift, and the factory runs 24/7. That’s a lot of hummus.

Our group was introduced to a new lineup of products: four flavors of salsa, two versions of guacamole, and three low-fat Greek yogurt-based vegetable dips. My favorite flavor by far is the onion and fresh herbs (which was also just declared “the best dip I’ve ever eaten,” by Simon). We also tried two new hummus flavors: Basil Pesto and Buffalo Style.

Hummus Deviled Eggs

Makes 12 Servings (recipe created by Sabra chef, Colombe Jacobsen, and tweaked slightly by The Meal Makeover Moms)

  • 6 large eggs (we like to use omega-3 eggs)
  • 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon Sabra hummus
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon relish
  • Paprika for garnish

1. Place eggs in saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Turn off the heat and let sit for 17 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and run cold water over the eggs. Cool eggs 10 minutes.

2. Remove shells when cool. Cut each egg in half lengthwise and scoop out the yolk and reserve in bowl of a food processor.

3. Add hummus, olive oil, pepper, and salt to the yolks and puree in the food processor. Add the relish and pulse 3 to 5 times to incorporate. (If you don’t have a food processor, place ingredients in a bowl and use a potato masher to blend.)

4. Put the yolk mixture in a piping bag. (Use a tall glass and fold the edges of the piping bag over the glass to make it easier to transfer the mixture.) Pipe about a teaspoon of the mixture into each of the egg white halves and sprinkle with paprika. You can also use a small zip-top plastic bag for piping. Fill the bag and snip about half an inch off one bottom corner. Squeeze an equal amount of the mixture into each egg white half.

    Thanks

I love the Sabra Roasted Garlic with Pine Nuts Hummus! Yummm! We love to eat it with pretzel crackers, baked pitas, veggies, and just about anything we can get our hands on. Love it!

  168. Danielle Krueger says:

Just bought some garlic hummus this week -but love making my own w/Ranch dressing. It just tastes good as a dip w/the veggies -hard to stop eating it. And I was eating w/tator tots -not the healthiest food item -but I did increase the fiber w/hummus!!!!!!

  169. Kathy M says:

Sabra is m favorite brand of hummus, and I always have a carton of classic hummus in the large family-sized container, even tho my husaband and I are now empty nesters! One of my favorite ways to use hummus is on a sandwich. I often use a whole wheat bun, slather it with Sabra hummus and top it with red onion and smoked turkey. It’s it’s summer or early fall, I will also add some fresh basil leaves from my garden. Yum! And it’s good for me, too!

  170. Jennifer says:

I like the classic used as a dip

  172. Jaimie Hoover says:

I LOVE hummus!!! My favorites are garlic and original but I enjoy trying all different flavors. My favorite items to dip include celery sticks, pretzel chips, pita crisps, and whole wheat pita bread. It is a wonderful sandwich on honey 7grain bread with lettuce, cucumber and roasted red peppers!

  173. Carol says:

I love hummus, and Sabra’s is better than the other brands. The texture is like smooth buttercream frosting, much better than other brands. I love garlic, traditional, red pepper, onion herb, buffalo, jalapeno, lemon, spicy, and chipotle. My favorite use is for fresh veggie dip, I’m having baby carrots and grape tomatoes with humus right now. I also spread it on sandwiches because I hate mayo and although I use mustard alot, there are some things mustard clashes with. I haven’t used it to cook with very much, so would be interested in that, though I have heard of using mashed chick peas in deviled eggs to make family reunions and picnics food safe (instead of mayo that spoils too easily).

I like it with cucumbers on pita bread!

  178. tamar says:

My kids like the classic flavor but I like the roasted garlic. My family loves to dip pretzels in chummus, which we learned from those little pretzel packages. We do it for much cheaper at home without individual packaging. I offer it if one of the kids don’t like supper.

We love hummus with olive oil, kalamata olives, garlic, sundried tomatoes and feta. Mmmmm!!

  184. Brooke says:

my favorite way to eat hummus is as a dip! YUM with pretzels or triscuits.

  185. Anne Keo says:

I absolutely LOVE Sabra hummus – best store bought hummus there is! My favorite is roasted pine nut. I’m excited for the Basil Pesto to come out.

I use hummus mostly as a dip. We eat it with everything at our house. I also use it on sandwiches instead of mayo. Adds a nice flavor. I’m excited to try it as an ingredient – never thought of it before until this post.

Sabra hummus is a favorite in our house. We love the sun dried tomato hummus with veggies.

  191. Robin says:

I love hummus and so does my 2 year old son. If I don’t get his dippers to him in time, he’ll eat the hummus straight. I love putting hummus on my sandwiches. I’ll layer hummus with cream cheese, toms, olives, and basil. Yummy!

  192. Nicole says:

This is perfect timing! I feel bad I’ve never offered hummus to my kids, but luckily a neighbor had hummus and veggies at our block party. My daughter loved it and asked me to buy some. Of course we got Sabra brand classic for her to dip baby carrots. I also make a version of a sandwich made at a defunct middle eastern restaurant, by the name of Sabra: pita filled w/hummus, cucumber, shredded carrot, avacado slices, and feta. Yum!

  193. We love hummus at our house including my children 7 &10.
The red pepper is our favorite. We always have hummus in the fridge for a quick healthy snack with wheat thins. My favorite snack -or lunch are turkey or pastrami deli meat wraps – to make them I take a slice of deli meat – spread hummus on it then put tomato and avocado slices inside and roll into a little wrap. Since my husband and I have been trying to loose weight use hummus instead of ranch when we do chicken wraps too.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  194. Karen says:

Hummus is an essential with a great Middle Eastern meal (tabouli, kufta, falafel, grape leaves, chicken shwarma, tzitziki sauce & pita) and great as a vegetable dip, but I also use it as an alternative to mayo in tuna fish sandwiches – yum!

  195. Sandi says:

I love hummus and my current favorite is a sun dried tomato hummus recipe given to me by a friend. I make if slightly on the thick side and use it as a dip for veggies and pretzels and also a spread on pita bread. Both are great for lunches at work and a late afternoon quick snack.

I love roasted garlic hummus, but really I love all hummus. I like to make it from scratch, although now a days it is so available and yummy from the store, I usually buy it. I like it as a dip or a spread!

  200. Tanya says:

My favorite recipe for hummus is one I got from Cook’s Illustrated. It has a nice lemony flavor and artichoke hearts! Yum! I like to eat it with pita bread.

  201. Serra says:

My favorite snack at work is pretzel chips and hummas (garlic lovers to be exact). Although carrots would be a close second. My co-workers and I can devour an entire variety before lunch!

  202. Teresa says:

I love the roasted red pepper hummus with pine nuts. The last time I purchased it the store, Food World, was out of the one topped with pine nuts and the manager gave me “free” a jar of pinenuts to have with it, awesome I thought. A friend introduced me to hummus and it is a regular with multi-grain crakers for a quick lunch. Loved reading all your recipes using hummus!

  203. Michael Bird says:

I hadn’t realized Sabra made all those flavors!

  204. I love the classic Sabra hummus or the roasted red pepper hummus dipped in pretzels or on a sammie…or with carrots…or on crackers…or in deviled eggs…the list goes on and on…so I use it as both! Thanks for the giveaway!

  205. I subscribed to your RSS feed too…

  206. Becky says:

I just love all Sabra’s hummus flavors, but I found the buffalo one at my store this week and it is FAB! Still think my favorite is the pine nuts one though. Can’t wait to try it in the deviled eggs recipe! How cool is that!

  207. Eliza J says:

Instead of using bread for a sandwich I take a leaf of Romaine lettuce and spread some Sabra Greek Olive or Roasted Red Pepper on the leaf then add a slice of Turkey, roll it up and eat – Yummmm!!

My favorite hummus is the Sabra garlic flavor, although my husband tends to hog the yummy garlic bits in the middle. We like humus as a dip on raw veggies, sugar snap peas are a favorite, or with home-made baked tortilla chips made from whole wheat tortillas. Yummy!

My husband and I love Sabra hummus. It’s so creamy. My 6-year-old also likes to eat hummus with chips. Since he enjoys cooking with me, he will probably enjoy making some recipes using hummus too.

  219. Laura says:

I love Sabra’s Luscious Lemon hummus. I paired it with sliced avocado on a fresh green salad for lunch or with baby whole-grain pitas sliced in half for dipping with the kids. I’ve always loved the red bell pepper hummus. It’s natural sweetness is a winner with kids and elders alike! Some people can’t tolerate garlic or onion so these varieties are real crowd pleasers.

  220. Amy says:

I am slightly addicted to the Roasted Red Pepper spread on blue corn chips. I have tried many brands of the roasted red pepper hummus (because I can not always find the Sabra brand), plus I have tried to make the hummus from scratch and none of it is as good as the Sabra. I also like to add the hummus to my salmon patties.

  221. Robert says:

I love the Roasted Red Pepper , I mix it with cottage cheese and eat it for breakfast.

I love the Roasted Red Pepper or Roasted Garlic Hummus spread… I spread it on a mini bagel, top with a thick slice of tomato, some baby spinach, a slice of fresh mozzarella, and the other bagel half. Then, I press it in my make-shift paninni grill (my George Forman), until the outside is crispy and inside ooey-gooey melty. YUM!
