Podcast 88: 2010 Goals & Food Trends

The start of any new year is an ideal time to set goals … and resolve to stick with them.  In this week’s Cooking with the Moms podcast, we shared our resolutions for 2010 and highlighted some interesting food trends to look out for.

Meal Makeover Moms’ 2010 Resolutions:

> Write our second cookbook and get it onto bookstore shelves!

> Cook more with ingredients like barley, quinoa, and barramundi, and create new recipes for waffles, smoothies, and school lunches.

> Host a Drop In & Decorate event around Mother’s Day.

> Meet more of our Meal Makeover Mom fans in person as we travel the country. For example, Janice will be in North Dakota in April, and Liz will be in Key West in February … ideal times to meet up with fans.

> Build community with fellow food, nutrition and mommy bloggers in the Boston area and beyond.

> Research iPhone apps and have one made for The Meal Makeover Moms (back in November, we met Tina at the Manic Mommies Escape, and she said she can help us with this).

> Janice’s personal goals: Plan and design a new kitchen AND figure out how to pay for it, get Carolyn off to college, read the stack of books and magazines that have built up in her family room, and, get back into tai chi.

> Liz’s personal goals: Get Josh into braces and Simon into middle school, work out more, and figure out how to stop the wrinkles that have appeared on her face!

As for food trends, here are a few from Phil Lempert, the Supermarket Guru, and from The Food Channel.

Food Origin: People want to know where their food comes from,  so expect to see the return of the local butcher (within supermarkets and as free-standing shops) where shoppers will go, select the cuts of meat they prefer, and have it ground on demand.

Word of Mouth Recommendations: Thanks to new technologies – things like mobile devices, mommy bloggers, and Twitter, shoppers will depend less on advertising and more on social networking and apps to help them decide where to eat and what foods to buy.

Less is More: Consumers are looking for healthier, “real” food products with short ingredient lists. Simplicity is “in.”

Mainstreaming of Sustainability: From coast to coast, 2010 will ignite a keen interest in sustainability — eating local with fresh and seasonal ingredients, less packaging, biodegradable packaging, and more grass-fed beef.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year. What are your resolutions and predictions?

Hmmm.. right now we have no plans to be in Utah this year, but you never know! We’ll let you know if an opportunity comes up for us to travel to Utah.

Great plans! I was especially interested to find out about the Drop In and Decorate parties. I’m a Brownie Scout leader, and I think this would be a fabulous event for the girls and their moms. Thanks for the tip!
