Podcast 54: Vitamin D Nutrition

sunImagine a vitamin that keeps your teeth and bones strong, bolsters your immune system, boosts brain health, promotes a healthy heart, fights certain cancers, and more.  It may sound too good to be true, but new research suggests that vitamin D, the so-called sunshine vitamin, is truly a super nutrient.   Last fall the American Academy of Pediatrics doubled the amount of vitamin D it recommends for babies, kids, and adolescents from 200 IU a day to 400 IU.  You can read all about the new guidelines on the AAP website.

Given all the buzz about vitamin D, we decided to feature it in this week’s Cooking with the Moms podcast. During the show, we outline vitamin D’s many health benefits (well beyond the prevention of rickets), discuss the best dietary sources to up your intake including vitamin D fortified milk and fatty fish like salmon, and dish about whether a dietary supplement is right for you. We also share two D-licious recipes, Banana Split Smoothie and Grilled Mozzarella & Smoked Salmon Panini.

There are lots of great websites you can turn to if you have additional questions about vitamin D.  We just found a great site sponsored by the Got Milk? folks called Get Your D. When you’re on the site, you can access all the latest research on vitamin D and take an online quiz to see if you are D-prived.  Please don’t hesitate to post comments or questions here or consult with your doctor or dietitian.
