Janice Newell Bissex, MS, RD
Janice Newell Bissex is a speaker, nutrition consultant, spokesperson, and author of No Whine with Dinner: 150 Healthy, Kid-Tested Recipes from The Meal Makeover Moms (M3 Press, 2011) and The Moms’ Guide to Meal Makeovers: Improving the Way Your Family Eats, One Meal at a Time (Broadway Books, 2004). She received her undergraduate degree in Food & Nutrition from University of Maine, and her Master of Science in Nutrition from Boston University. She has completed training both at the Culinary Institute of America and the Intermediate Wine Program at Boston University.
Her professional experience includes Nutrition Director for the New England Heart Center in Boston and Sales Manager for Practorcare, a nutrition software company. For four years, Janice was the Nutrition Consultant to the U.S. Senate in Washington, DC, where she worked with U.S. Senators, their spouses, and foodservice personnel. After leaving the Senate, Janice spent ten years at the Boston Harbor Hotel, consulting with the hotel’s award-winning executive chef and counseling clients at the hotel’s health club. There, she created “Food & Wine for Life,” an annual event featuring nutrition seminars and cooking demonstrations.
A resource for local and national media, Janice has appeared on CNN, PBS, New England Cable News, Fox5-DC, Good Day Atlanta, and conducted dozens of live TV interviews nationwide. The Moms’ Guide to Meal Makeovers, one of three finalists for the 2005 International Association of Culinary Professionals Healthy Cookbook Award, has been featured in national and local press including Newsweek, The Boston Parents’ Paper, Reader’s Digest, The Oregonian, The Boston Herald, and Parents magazine. Janice has completed numerous radio interviews and is a sought-after speaker for conferences and special events, many of which incorporate cooking demonstrations.
Janice champions good nutrition on her website, MealMakeoverMoms.com. The content on her site serves as a resource for parents in search of realistic and practical ways to improve the family diet. There, they can join her free Meal Makeover Moms’ Club, listen to her weekly radio podcast, Cooking with the Moms, read her award-winning blog, watch cooking videos, try the kid-friendly recipes, and more. For three years, Janice wrote the monthly Meal Makeover column for Nick Jr. Family Magazine and is presently writing for Kiwi Magazine.
Janice has received numerous awards throughout her career, including Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year in 1993. She was recently named by Babble.com as one of the Top 50 Best Mom Food Bloggers on the web, and her blog was nominated by Foodbuzz for Best Family Food Blog in 2009.
Janice is an active member of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), having served in various capacities including President of the Massachusetts Dietetic Association. She has served on the Nutrition Advisory Boards at Johnson & Wales University and Dunkin Brands and is a founding member of the Food & Culinary Professionals practice group of the ADA. She is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals and American Institute of Wine & Food. She is a Trustee of her local charter school where she advocated for healthier school meals, resulting in many positive changes. Janice lives in Melrose, Massachusetts with her husband and two daughters, ages 20 and 12.
