Sweet Potatoes in a Flash

Our love for sweet potatoes is no secret, and we make the Sweet Potato Fries recipe in The Moms’ Guide to Meal Makeovers frequently. There are days, however, when the thought of peeling, slicing, and baking those sweet potatoes is just too much, even for the Meal Makeover Moms. Our appetite for convenience recently led us to the supermarket where we cruised down the frozen food aisle in search of the best frozen sweet potato fries.

After a thorough review, we found a terrific and tasty product made with healthy oils, no trans fats, and less sodium than you typically find in a frozen potato product. If you have an opportunity to try McCain Sweet Potato Crinkle Cut Fries – our “best of the bunch” winner — be sure to let us know what you think! And while you’re at it, to learn more about the nutritional benefits of sweet potatoes and clever ways to get kids to eat them (or other veggies for that matter), listen to the May 28, 2008 “Vegetables Kids Love” edition of Cooking with the Moms, our weekly radio podcast.

I just wanted to let you know that I listen to your podcast every week. Yesterday, I made the “Jello Jigglers” and the granola and both were a HUGE hit with my kids! Thanks for sharing your recipes!

I look forward to your latest edition of rating more foods. Will you be updating your nuggets, hot dogs, etc. again? I just hope that this time there are more brands out there that are by me.

Maybe a business trip to explore different supermarkets in different parts of the country since it seems like these vary. :)

I recently purchased your book and have prepared a few of the recipes, which my family loved–THANK YOU!! I was wondering if you had a healthy/kid friendly recipe for making bread, preferably a bread machine recipe? Once again thank you for helping me make my family healthier ‘One Meal At A Time’

    Hi All:

We’re so glad Amy and her family are enjoying the recipes featured in our weekly podcast, Cooking with the Moms (www.MealMakeoverMoms.com). Coming up this week is a show on Summer Salads followed by our August 6th show on Frozen Treats. We’re especially excited for the August 6th show — we featured our first “live” guest, Liz’s niece, Andrea, who gobbled up our recipes for frozen pops and a makeover sundae.

Ann, we’d love to take a business trip around the country sampling food products. Where do you live? Maybe we’ll start there!! In the meantime, we have been talking about doing a review of granola bars. Hey, maybe we’ll do it to coincide with our Podcast on September 10th when we plan to share a recipe for homemade Grab-and-Go Granola Bars. We’ll keep you posted on any new healthy “kid” foods we find at the market.

Finally, Amy M. asked about a recipe for homemade bread using a bread machine. Janice has a recipe but is just back from a week in Seattle and can’t find it beneath the rubble (i.e. laundry, mail, back-to-school coupons). She’ll dig it up and post it to the blog soon.

In the meantime, keep on cooking!

We’re happily on our way to Dallas! We’re leaving Kansas this week so it would be a great area for you to check out. Besides, we don’t have a Trader Joe’s down there so we need help with the next best! You can even borrow my new kitchen!
